XPS Viewer is a native Microsoft program designed to open, read, and print files in the XML Paper Specification (.xps and .oxps) formats. Document Fidelity: It locks text and image formatting in place so files cannot easily be accidentally edited or altered when shared.
Basic Functionality: The standalone utility lets you scroll through pages, zoom in or out, print hard copies, and perform basic keyword text searches.

Because Adobe’s PDF format eventually won the universal standard war, Microsoft retired the XPS format from active focus. Starting with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (Version 1803) and continuing through Windows 11, Microsoft removed XPS Viewer from the default out-of-the-box software installation.
